Metadata may be an afterthought when it comes to most people’s digital music collections, but when it comes to finding, buying, selling, rating, sharing, or describing music, little matters more. Metadata defines how we talk about music—from discrete bits like author, title, genre etc, to its broader context and history. Metadata circulates inlocal fan bases, online social networks, and live musical experiences. Its value is immense, especially when collected in large databases. But where does it come from? Who determines its accuracy — and who decides what accuracy means? Lastly, who does metadata belong to? A lof these questions reveal clashes between cultures, economic interests, and creative communities. To explore the answers, Larisa Mann will draw on three examples drawn from ethnographic fieldwork inJamaica, 15 years of dj experience, and recent controversies in the tech industry.
